Scouts Founder's Day Message 2011

To All Ngee Ann Wichita Scouts,

Below are the message from our Chief Commissioner, Mr Tan Cheng Kiong.

My Dear brother and sister Scouts, today, as we celebrate our Founder's birthday, let us make a fresh commitment to our Scout Law and Promise. As we reflect on what it means to be a good scout, I want to highlight the importance of making friends and maintaining harmonious relationship with others.

As Scouts, we share common values and cherish the friendships we forge. The various local and international social gatherings, such as campfires and jamborees, provide us with ample opportunities to make friends with fellow scouts.

The more important part of this pledge is the maintenance of the friendships that have been forged for a lifetime. This requires you to make the effort to find time to interact with your friends, keep in touch with them regularly, share with them your life experiences, good or bad, and be truly concerned about them. In your interactions with them, always look for positive and seek first to understand rather than be understood. Take time on this day to send a text message or an email to your local and overseas friends. Let them know that you remember them on this special day.

Besides caring for your friends, it is also important to learn how to maintain harmonious relationships with others. Through you daily interactions with schoolmates of different races and foreigners in your community, you should seek to appreciate the differences in their views and practices with a view of accepting these differences. The acceptance of others for who they are is especially important in our multi-racial and multi-cultural society. In the process, you will become not just a better scout, but a better citizen.

On this note, I would like to thank the principals and teachers-in-charge for your unstinting support and dedication in inspiring, encouraging and promoting the growth of Scouting as a uniformed group in your school. We deeply value the support you have provided and the strong patnership with you. Together, we will continue to provide our youths with the experiences that will help them become better individuals.

Let me take this opportunity to wish all of you a Very Happy World Scout Day!

Yours-in-Scouting,
Fareeq
Hearty Gorilla
