Info Bites for proficiency badges

Dear Scouts,

For those of you who are taking up the challenge of pursuing the various proficiencies, the internet is probably the best place to search for the know-how. You can go to any search engine there and type any key term under the sun. It is quick, easy and effective. You can go on your own fact-finding mission for anything ranging from athletics, camping, cooking, fishing etc. And here's some interesting stuff to start off with:

1. For a healthy lifestyle and cooking recipes

http://www.health.com/health
http://www.webmd.com/
http://www.mayoclinic.com/

2. For the best how-to videos on things ranging from hobbies to everyday tasks

http://www.howcast.com/
http://www.wonderhowto.com/

3. For running and stamina improvement

Good luck!

Yours in Scouting,
Nazri

Dear Wichita Scouts,

I believed that you guys had been working super hard for the past few weeks, be it the founder's day parade or the district field day. Good job done guys.

Though somethings might have screwed up somewhere and somehow, it's good to hear that as a Wichita Scout, you guys have proved yourself in terms of skills or attitude. As a Wichita Leader, i am very proud of you guys. Continue to keep up the good work.

At the same time, i would like to wish good luck to our potential CCA holders for the prelim report. :)

Last but not least, i would like to announce the re-opening of our Ngee Ann Wichita Venture Unit. More information will be available on www.nasventure.blogspot.com.

All the best and good luck!

Post Founder's Day Notes

Dear Scouts

Happy Founders' Day! I'm leaving the philosophizing to another future note, but here are the more important notices to note to wrap up Feb... and what's to expect for March.

1. Normalization back into Training Calendar

With Founder's Day behind our backs, it's time to return to the training programme. But those who're still missing certain tests OR proficiency badges, don't worry! please continue to approach your nearest friendly PLs or Leaders to arrange for a test date. Last week saw many happy Scouts getting closer to their attained Standards.

However, the leaders will appreciate if you guys can come in a group for your tests if possible. Also, tests will only be conducted during meeting time when there is the luxury of time. Otherwise, we may have to arrange to meet at another time (maybe even Saturday).

2. Reference for Profi Badge Scheme

Many of you have asked me what're the requirements for the profi badge schemes. Unfortunately, the leaders and your PLs aren't walking encyclopaedias, so you'll have to settle for the 01x copy of Ngee Ann Wichita Proficiency Scheme that's been made available to your TL. Please consult him on this. Or email us nicely. and in advance.

3. March Akan Datang

Starting from the next few weeks, we'll be getting everyone ready for 2 camps. The first one's the Job Week Camp that's gonna last 4d3n, starting right on Friday of the last week of school before the March Hols. Our programme will be light but you guys will be busy running around for Job Week (for the Sec 1s and uninformed, that's when we wear our uniforms and go around doing good deeds to raise funds for our activities as we're a voluntary organization).

Also, we'll be having our Official Sec 1 Tenderfoots Investiture on Saturday 14th March. Your parents will be invited as well, so before we release the official invitation please feel free to ask your parents down. It's a Ngee Ann tradition that we believe Scouting is a fulsome process that involves your family too :)

For June Camp, another 4d3n saga, it'll be much more focused on testing your training from now until then. For the very basics, we're gonna have Knots lessons for everyone. Your PLC will be arranging for you guys an exciting programme lined up for you, so watch out for this space!

OK that's enough for now! Study hard and may your Scouting interest continue to burn bright

Friday, February 6, 2009

Dear Wichita Scouts,

This post is mainly for the new Tenderfoots/sec 1s but
please carry on reading too so as to refresh your memory
as to expectations and etc.

Firstly, Everyone wishes the tenderfoots a warm welcome to
the Wichita Family.
What you are viewing now is the 'noticeblog'
of NAS Wichita scout troop.
We are unable to have our noticeboard up due to the
restrictions the school have given us due to PRIME.
So unfortunately our Previous Beautiful Noticeboard had been taken down
and modified into this blog (:

Secondly, i shall give my own personal opinion about scouting first.
What I have noticed over the past 3 years is that most people
join their CCAs with the attitude that
'CCA is only what i stay back in school to do.
Anytime after that im just myself. So whether i want
to come to my CCA is my own buisness.'
Scouting in a secondary school life is somewhat
DIFFERENT from
- Other CCAs
- Cub Scout Units.
Other CCAs
Scouting isn't just another CCA that
people just come to get CCA points to as to minus off from their L1R5/4
To me, Scouting is more of a passion.
I don't come for scouts just because i HAVE to.
but rather, I come for scouts because i WANT to.
Many of the Ex-NASians did not start out this way too.
Not everybody put scouts as their first choice.
In the current badge of Patrol Leaders Council, (seniors)
Some of them put CCAs like 'Badminton etc...' as their first choice.
And everyone did not start off with a fantastic interest for scouts.

However as time goes by,
we realised that Scouting actually offers more to what we
ever hoped for in a CCA.
Through scouting, we get to meet new friends.
From different classes, schools, ages. And even different countires.
Together we find our own interest,
and most importantly have fun through a strong and bonded relationship.

Nevertheless, Scouts is a uniformed group.
And therefore discipline in NAS wichita is extremely important.
Quick movement, ability to follow instructions,
alertness, standardization, teamwork, quick thinking,
initiative, leadership, cooperation, respect... etc
Are all vulnerable in scouting in NAS wichita.
We have so far maintained a fairly- well disciplined troop
as of compared to others.
There is always a time to do different things,
therefore this line is very important in Wichita scouting too:
"Once the meeting start, I'll be your Troop Leader.
Once the meeting ends, I'll be your friend."

I can also see that those reasons others give to attract
applicants to their CCA is ' train you for NS'
I can confirm plus chop garantee that NAS wichita gives
a BETTER training to everyone of its members compared to
anyone/any CCA that says those 4 bolded words.
You have my word (:
Furthermore, I have met people from other CCAs telling me that
"if i had a choice again, i'll choose scouts as my CCA."
Thats the thing that differentiates us from other CCAs,
People cant see the fun of scouting from the outside.
But they can only know its true meaning after they've joined it. (:

Cub Scout Units
Secondary School scouting is very different from primary school scouting.
Its not just about sitting around and singing songs and having
a game of 'captain ball' for every 3 hours.
Like i said, much is to be expected of a seondary school scout.
The most important is of course.... Discipline.
Secondly will be the activities wise.
Most sec1s have the misconception that scouting in secondary school
is also about singing songs and playing games.
However, scouting in sec school have a MORE variety of
activities such as ' Pioneering, Orienteering, Backwoodsman cooking,
Campcraft, Footdrills, Service' and many many others.
All of these activities are targetted at building up
your own personal character as a person,
Your scouting skills,
and of course your self-discipline in the outside world.
Many of our seniors have all left Ngee Ann Secondary
a better person in life with the help of Scouting in Wichita,
And to of course prepare you for your service to the country.

Here are some meeting essentials that you guys have to take note of
during your days as a scout in ngee ann.
-Scout Meeting days are on Wednesday and Fridays
-Meeting details will be posted on this blog.
-The venue in which we always fall in first is at
the 'Old Scout Den'. Or rather the area whr you guys sat down
in front of the glass cabinets at the arts atrium.
-When a water break is given, only drink water from the water cooler.
No buying of drinks is allowed.
-Please please please x100 do not wear your school uniform to scout meeting
-The Troop Leader is me, Guo Jingyang
-The Senior Patrol Leader is Chan Wai Hon.
-Tiger Patrol leader : Derrick Tan
-Panther Patrol leader : Wong Zheng Xun
-Eagle Patrol leader: Koh Dong Kun
-Owl Patrol leader: Justin Tay
-Rayfish Patrol leader: Kevin Tan

This are mainly the points that you need to know for your future scout meetings.
More details on Wednesday 11/2/2009 meeting will be posted on Monday night.
Please do frequently visit this blog in case of any
last minute/ die die situation updates.
Till next time, enjoy your weekend (:

Thank You,
Yours In Scouting (YIS),
Jingyang

Akan Datang for Feb

Dear Scouts and All,

Just a few updates from the Leaders:

1. XP Quest for Everyone to Level Up

I've discussed with the PLC about the programme to look out for in the next few weeks. Whilst our new Sec One brother Tenderfoots will stream in shortly this week (please give them your warmest welcome) the seniors shouldn't start to feel neglected. The PLC will be asking you what test(s) you are lacking to upgrade to the next Progress Scheme. This is so we can hopefully level up everyone before Founders Day where you can start wearing your uniforms proudly in front of your friends and teachers with More badges *grin*

So please give them your fullest support - take the initiative as a Patrol and tell them what tests you need. They'll work out the Training Schedule with you guys accordingly, and the Leaders will co-ordinate with them to test you on the required segments.

Our target date, naturally, will be by the Founders' Day Parade at school 20th Feb Friday.

2. Shopping @ SSA HQ

Before all the Sec Ones in Singapore crash in to Bishan Scout Shop to get their uniforms, the Leaders have managed to book a date and time for our Unit to go down to HQ.

Date: 18th Feb Wednesday
Time: 3pm - 6pm (to reach HQ at 4pm)
Mode of travel: Bus 59 outside school

I hope the APLs (or any other senior) can lead the Sec Ones down to HQ for this trip. Also, please use this opportunity to replenish any parts of your uniform that have now fallen into a horrid state e.g. faded woggles, SOCKS etc...
