Camp Gauntlet December 2010

Hi all,

Later this month, we will be having Camp Gauntlet 2010. This camp plays a crucial role in the selection of the next batch of PLC members. This announcement is meant for all current Sec 2s.

Details

The duration of the camp will be 4 days and 3 nights starting from 7am 20 Dec. Sec 2s, you will only find out what is in store for you at the start of this camp. You are expected to be at your best both physically and mentally because you will be stretched in both areas. The leaders will be planning this camp carefully in order to give you a challenging experience where you will be stretched to your limits within reasonable bounds. Meanwhile, you will need to make your own preparations well before the start of the camp. Here is a guide for the tasks you have ahead:

You will need to come up with:
- A packing list keeping in mind the duration of the camp
- A food and equipment list
- 2 patrol-level first aid kits
- Your individual Wichita kits
- Navigation tools (2 maps and 2 compasses)

You will need to meet up and plan out all of the above by 16 Dec. At this deadline, you will need to send a copy of the above to the leaders for checking and approval. Your contact person will be Nazri Sir (myself) at noldorinelf2000@hotmail.com.

In addition, there are a few points to take note: we will be meeting with all Gauntlet participants on the 19th in school to do a quick inspection of all the preparations made. Also, do note that we will be confiscating all SMARTPHONES with navigation functions prior to the start of the hike on the 20th and you will be allowed to bring only 2 basic phones so please decide beforehand who these 2 people will be. Your smartphones will only be returned at the end of day 2. These details will suffice for now. If you have any questions, you can contact me via email or fb.

A hello from far far away

Dear Scouts,

The exams are around the corner for some of you, and already happening for others. Either way, just wanna wish you guys gd luck! Mug hard and prove to everyone, and especially yourself, what you Truly are capable of (other than snapping my lashings and failing to meet timings).

It seems like ages ago that I have last dropped by for a Scout meeting. Looking at our Troop Blog gave me a clue why. Of course, amongst other things, I have been utterly busy with work. Do know that I miss my time with you Scouts a whole load! of course, not for the tekan. But if you guys haven't realized by now, you are all a special bunch of brothers, friends, frenemies (friendly enemies), makan kakis, come-late-for-school buddies - in essence, a band of Scout friends. Once the meetings resume, I hope to take more opportunity to share with you guys why my own Scouting days were special, and possibly recreate such learning moments so you all can benefit and learn from it as well.

Tampines District Frisbee Challenge 2010

Here are the details for the upcoming Frisbee Challenge, which is open to all scouts.

The Frisbee challenge will be split into 2 stages:

Stage 1 – Frisbee Clinic:
Date: 23rd July 2010 (Friday)
Time: 1500 hours – 1800 hours
Venue: East Spring Secondary School

Participating scouts will be taught the basic rules and regulations of Frisbee during the clinic to ensure that every team has got equal knowledge of the game on the challenge day.

Stage 2 – Frisbee Challenge:
Date: 28th August 2010 (Saturday)
Time: 0800 hours – 1600 hours
Venue: East Spring Secondary School

Participants will need to form teams of 8, so encourage your fellow peers to join in the fun! As the Frisbee Challenge is a competition, there will be trophies awarded to the winning teams, and participants will also receive an event badge and a certificate.

For those who are interested please inform your respective PLs or me to receive the email with the participation forms. Please do so by the end of this week as we need to confirm the teams soon, thanks.

All scouts are to revise on the knots that they have learnt as threwill be a knots competiton during the meeting. you may go to the woodshed to get a lashing home to practice BUT you need a teacher to accompany you to get the lashing. Please return the lashing during the meetin on Saturday if u have taken it.

PS: Whoever wants to get anything from the scouts store, u need to have a teacher to accompany you to go and get it. Please DO NOT TAKE anything from the store without permission. Thanks!!!

Scout Rally

For the Scouts Rally tomorrow, the reporting time for the volunteers will be 8.30a.m. at hwa chong institution itself. For participants, please report in school at 12.15p.m. as the bus will be leaving at 12.30p.m. The attire for tomorrow is wichita shirt and p.e. pants for both the volunteers and the participants. FOr those without wichita shirt, please wear your PE shirt. The event will end at 4p.m. and the participants can go home first. There will also be transport provided for going back to school at 6.30p.m. For the coupons, it will be distributed tomorrow.

For the volunteers: Please remember and try to bring some decorative materials to decorate the game stall material. Thanks

Scout Rally 2010 Plan

Hi Scouts!

As you all know, your mid-years are coming to an end, and it will soon be time celebrate the holidays! And there is hardly a better way to usher in the post-exam fever than to participate in the upcoming Scout Rally 2010 (= The Scout Rally 2010 is an event featuring lots of fun, good food and great games that brings together fellows like you from all around in the spirit of Scouting. You can hop by and be a part of this great event on the 22nd of May (Sat) at the Hwa Chong Institution.

Also, just as important, I will be managing one of the game stalls there and I will be needing 5 to 8 Scouts to help me out in the running of the stall throughout the event. I will be creating and managing a game that is different from the rest. So you might wonder what is this game all about? And what is your role as a volunteer helper here? I will have to be brief here, so I will only say that we will be selling do-it-yourself airplane gliders. Your key roles and responsibilities include manning the stall and facilitating in the assembly of the airplane gliders after the younger scouts have purchased them. Prior to the actual event on the 22nd of May, I will need a few hours of your time in order to put together everything that will make up our game stall. I will announce more details at our next scout meeting right after your exams in order to whip up more interest and support. So, I hope to see you there! Thanks (=

Scouts Rally

As you all know, there will be a Scout Rally on the 22 May 2010 (saturday) at hwa chong institution from 1430hrs to 1800hrs. The Scout Rally is organized to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Scout Movement in Singapore. There will be singing of songs, flag parade and 36 stalls will be set up for learning and family bonding games in a meaningful and scout fun way. For a $5 fee, you will be able to bring along a friend or a family member and you will receive a complimentary centenary scarf (100 years scarf)(only for the first person you bring along), a commemorative event badge, a bottled drink and a coupon for stall activities. Your participation in this event is strongly encouraged and please try to bring along a friend or a family member. for those interested, you may tell your names to your respective patrol leaders or tell the PLC tomorrow. For those bringing friends or family members along, please remember to bring your $5. Thanks

There will be meeting this coming Saturday at 7.30am in your full uniform. Please bring along your Red Wichita Shirt, PE pants and Wichita Kit. (DUTY PATROL: OWL) Sec1s are advised to revise on your World Scout Badge knowledge as there will be a test during meeting, so bring along writing materials and foolscape paper along too. Also, bring along your breakfast to school if you do not have enough time to finish it at home as there will be a breakfast slot during the meeting.

Tenderfoots go Uniform Shopping tomorrow! 24 Feb 3 - 6pm

Dear Tenderfoots,

Tomorrow, your seniors will be showing you how to get to Scout HQ at Bishan. I understand that some of you have not been informed of this until now. I am very sorry about this; we will work harder to make sure you get information on time! Please inform your parents/guardians about this ASAP.

Fortunately, there is a direct bus to HQ from Ngee Ann! So you'll need to bring your EZ link card. As this will be the first time going down to the Scout HQ for most of you guys, do learn the route well; you will be making future trips by yourself.

The good news is that your uniform purchases are subsidized. The bad news is that you will need to pay the full amount first. Hence, please bring about $70. You will need to purchase:

Beret
beret badge
national scarf
woggle
shirt
belt
pants
socks (advised to get minimum of 2)
Tampines District Badge

Optional items:
Beret badge backing (you can make your own out of an old phonecard)
More scouts socks (please don't buy more than 4)

You will also be given nametags to sew on your uniforms. You can collect them from the Scout Shop tomorrow as well.

You will have to buy your Shoes (marching boots to be exact) yourself. We recommend you to go down to Beach Road Army Market to purchase a cheap pair that is sturdy and comfortable.

Please meet your seniors (Benedict Choong and Nasir) tomorrow at 3pm at the benches outside the auditorium. It will end at about 7pm (you will be released from the Scout HQ at 6pm).

Welcome & Founder's Day

**Update on 23 Feb** Due to the Common Tests this week, there will be NO MEETING this weekend. The next Scout meeting will be on SATURDAY 6th MARCH

For the new Tenderfoots (Sec ones) who just joined us, welcome! We hope you will enjoy the exciting series of events we have lined up for you in your years with the Wichita family.

This coming Saturday will be the World Badge Scout test for the Tenderfoots. Next Saturday (8th March) will be the World badge Scout Test. This is a written test that will test you on the basic scout lore that your seniors have taught you over the past few weeks. Upon passing, you will have earned your very first badge - the World Scout Badge - and will start your first step in a (hopefully long and happy) journey as a Scout.

Founder's Day (22 Feb, Monday) is a time where Scouts all over the world commemorate the founding of the Scout Movement worldwide. There are more than 28,000,000 scouts like you all over the world. So take heart that you belong to a Very Popular CCA.

But more importantly, Founder's Day is a time we set some time to pause and reflect on ourselves. How can you, as an individual, patrol, or Troop, make the world around you a bit of a better place?

Thus, on Founder's Day, as per tradition, I hope that everyone will tie a knot around your scarf at the beginning of the day, to remind yourself to do "a good deed a day", and only untie it when you have done so. So start thinking about how you can make this world a better place!

Upcoming Job Week Camp

Do take note that there will be a 4D3N camp held in Ngee Ann Sec for our annual Job Week camp. Held over the March school holidays in Singapore, Job Week is an opportunity for us to learn about humility and service. It will be held from 12 - 15th March. More details will be up soon.

On 13th March Saturday, we will be inviting your parents/guardians to participate in the Investiture Ceremony of the Tenderfoots. So do remind your parents/guardians about it. Of course, you will need to pass your World Scout Badge test first.

Night Cycling Trip

Those with their bikes will meet at school tomorrow at 5.30pm and those renting bikes will meet at East Coast Park Burger King at 6.30pm. Please bring at least $1o for those renting bikes and be in bright-coloured clothes. It is also recommended that you bring your own water in cases where there aren't any place to get water along the way. Please also bring any personal medications with you and the consent forms as well. During the trip, please obey the traffic rules to ensure a safe journey.

6th February Meeting & other updates

Pls fall in at 7.30am outside the auditorium in your full uniform. Bring along your red/PE whichita attire and your wichita kit.

Duty Patrol: Tiger
From this meeting onwards, being the duty patrol means that the patrol is to solely tie the 3-2-1 flagpole, and is in charge of setting it up. The PL and APL of the patrol will also be in charge of the ceremony.

For those who hasn't pay the scout fund, please pay it to Marcus this Saturday.

People who are unable to attend the meetings have to produce the evidence for their abscene. Eg. MC for sick people and wedding cards for people attending wedding dinners.

The sec 1s will be joining us this Saturday, so everyone please show a good example to the sec 1s by behaving appropriately. Try to get the sec 1s to adapt into the troop as soon as possible.

Meeting for 30th Jan and other updates

Please be in full uniform attire and have the flagpole set up by 7.30am. Bring along your red wichita shirt PT kit and your wichita kit. The meeting will last until 1pm and the breakfast period is still on, meaning you guys can still bring your breakfast.

The sec 2s and 3s will have to untie the flagpole by this wednesday and a new flapole will be built by the PLC.

Those who haven't pay the scout fund pls pass it to Marcus this Saturday. Remember the fund is at $2 and will be used for the welfare of the troop, including rewards. Thus the more we have the better the welfare.

Regarding the night cycling trip, it has been postponed to 20th February and more details will be given out this Saturday.

This Sat meeting is special as it is a Scout Standard Test Saturday. All the tests for Scout Standard will be tested during the meeting. Don't forget your logbook (and purple pen!)

Reminder about Scout Meetings

Dear All,

This is a reminder that All Scouts are responsible for checking this blog for updates as often as possible.

In addition, all Scout meetings, weekdays or weekends, are COMPULSORY. This is because your attendance is reflected into the school's admin system. i.e. CCA attendance is as important as class attendance. If you fail to turn up for a meeting without a doctor's MC, your record will be reflected as a wilful case of truant by MOE's system.

This is something very much beyond the teachers' ability to control, and the consequences are severe: not only will you be blacklisted on a national system, you will very possibly lose out a lot of CCA points, which can help you shave off 2 marks on your GCE 'O' Level exams if you get an A grade. So, help us to help you by simply coming down for meetings!

On our part, your PLs, APLs and Leaders have been reminding one and all to attend the meetings. Should there be any problems at home or your life that prevents you from coming down for meetings, please do not hesitate to approach your PLs or Leaders. The Wichita family will always be here for you!

The Owl Speaks (January 2010)

Dear All,

As promised, this year will be another full and fulfilling programme for all Scouts. I have 2 announcements to make:

I. Upcoming courses
II. Scout Standard tests (meeting on 24th Jan Sat - Compulsory for all! except Sec 3 overseas campers)

I. Upcoming courses
There will be several upcoming exciting courses for you to join for interest (& to make your sleeves wonderfully bulletproof). Here is the list of them:

A: INTRA-UNIT
These courses are conducted within Ngee Ann Wichita. Participants are expected to wear the Unit Scarf.
Interested applicants please contact the Troop Scribe aka Zhao Meng who will submit the list to Hearty Gorilla and me.

1. Unit Civics Proficiency Badge

Course Date: 30th Jan 2009 Saturday
Time: After Scout meeting, TBC
Venue: Ngee Ann Secondary School

Course Fee: FREE

Only Scouts with at least a Scout Standard and in the Upper Secondary Stream (i.e. have taken at least 2 years of Secondary school History and/or Social Studies) may apply. Participants will attend a day workshop and be expected to complete a written project to attain the badge.

B. INTER-UNIT
These courses are conducted on the National level. Participants are required to wear National scarves. Venues and Dates are to be confirmed: Interested participants are to sign up for the course and the Leaders will arrange for a slot. Be Prepared to go for the course at Any of the slots. As this is a National level course with Many interested participants, the faster we can compile our namelist, the better our chances in getting a favourable slot.

Interested applicants please inform your Patrol Leader ASAP. PLs please compile the lists and submit the namelist to both Hearty Gorilla and Mr. Joseph Teo.

2. Civil Defence Badge Course for 2010

- Open to Scouts (aged 13-14 years) or Sec. 1 & 2.
- Course Fee: $3.00 per participant/Scout
- 4 Intakes / Dates: 20 March, 03 June, 07 September and 30 November.

3. SANA Badge Course for 2010

- Open to Scouts (aged 13-15 years) or Sec. 1 to 3.

Course Fee: $10.00 per participant/Scout
-
7th Intakes / Dates: 18 March, 17 June, 18 June, 09 September, 15 November, 16 November and 18 November.


II. Scout Standard Tests

All sec 2s will be having the rest of the Scout Standard tests they have yet to complete. On the (hopefully) bright and sunny Saturday morning of 24th Jan, your dear Troop Leader has planned for you a series of tests to give you the Scout Standard by that day! (if you complete all requirements that is)

The list of tests will be:

1. Scout Standard Knots (all standard knots)
2. Tent pitching (4-6persons pitching/striking a tent in 10 minutes each + Know how to pitch properly)
3. Highwayman Code (written test; MCQ format, no. of questions and passing grade TBC)
4. Drill test (static drill)
5. Simple Cooking test (maggi mee, eggs, sausage and kailan using gas stove)
6. National Flag Anthem and Pledge
a) Know the meaning of the symbols and colours on the national flag
- full definition of colours, 5 stars and crescent moon
- dimensions and ratio of flag
b) National Anthem
- translate anthem into English
- Explain the coat of arms (tiger, lion, shield, red, white, banner)
- know the history of the Anthem (composer, when it was composed)
c) Pledge
- Recite the pledge in your Mother Tongue
- know the history of the Pledge (Writer, when it was written)

**NAWST AGM 2010**

Dear Wichita Scouts,

Notice is hereby given for the 1st Scout meeting of the year, which will also include our Annual General Meeting for 2010. Traditionally, we will kickstart each year's Wichita Scout meetings on a Saturday with a renewal of the Scout Promise, reviewing everyone's performance in the past year, announcements and some good clean fun. This year will be no different!

Do note there are no consent forms issued as this is a regular meeting.

There is no Duty Patrol for the 3-2-1 Flagpole, this will be done by the Sec 3s. IC will be Edward Lau.
Masters of Ceremony will be the TL and PL Panther. Please come with all badges sewn. If you still lack badges or nametags please approach the Teachers.

As this is the First meeting of the year with plenty of announcements, attendance is compulsory. Please come with all your necessary Scouty gear (Wichita Kit, change of PT attire)
