2010
The year 2010 is about to come. There are several things that I, as the TL, has realised throughout this year. Obviously, there are good and bad things. Lets start with the bad things first. The troop is usually not punctual and it refers to even when the meeting just starts and people are already late and during the meeting itself time extensions are frequently requested.
However, there are also good things. The entire PLC can see that everyone of you guys have to potential to be a good PL or even the TL of your batch. So, it is up to you guys to work hard, especially for the current Sec2s as it is almost time for us to step down. Currently, time is running out for you guys to prove yourselves to us so work and hard and good luck!:)
And also, I would like to thank all my PLs for assisting me throughout this year and not forgetting the leaders for having patience with us as a PLC. Also thanks to the APLC that the meetings were able to be successfully completed and also thanks to those members who constantly came( esp OWL PATROL).
The new year is coming and soon none of you guys will be sec1 juniors anymore. Please set a good example for your juniors ( Even if you are sec3 or 2 next year) by showing them the standard. By the way, there will be an Annual General Meeting on the 9 Jan 2010. It will be our first meeting. Further details will be released to you guys closer to the date. All Sec4 and 3 scouts(2010) please stay back after school on 4Jan for PLC. Thanks and enjoy your holidays, well whats left of it.(:
YIS,
Nigel

On a final note, the Girl Guides will be going and they are the ones organising this event.:) Reminder to all to do their holiday homework also. Please inform Alexus at 93209984 if you are going. Thanks.

Anyways, I just want to add something. Although the meetings were suspended due to the End-Of-Year Exams and some of you are 'rusty', I would still expect a certain level of discipline and also a full attendance for the upcoming meetings/courses/camps, you guys have to be more active in scouting. I will also want to see your completed Wichita Kit in the very next meeting. Just because we have not been checking it does not mean that we don't care. By now you all should have it, including the Sec1s.
Remember to keep your uniform neat and tidy, your berets seasoned with a proper backing. I do not want to see anyone of you not bringing your uniforms when you all are required to. If you have gone rusty will your scouting skills, go and practise them. Don't take your own sweet time during meetings and be punctual. Remember, SENSE OF URGENCY. Also, try to always be in the know and be more initiative.
Lastly, you guys can expect more fun and great events to come. As for what these exciting events are, you guys will know it when the time comes! (:

Darren xD

Scouting: Do more than just Do Well in School
Hope that this blog post finds you well. By that I mean mugging hard and on your way to scoring that string of As for your report book. But by no means should you become a depressed stressed-out boy and ignore everything else in life. So despite being hard at work, remember to find time to relax and destress.
On the other hand, I am not encouraging you to fail your exams. It's true that Baden-Powell was not known to be an exemplary student in Charterhouse: in fact, he developed his outdoors skills by sneaking out to the hills and forests out of school. However, he was always an avid learner from the "school of life" and benefitted a great deal from it. Scouting is a lot about moral character building (e.g.: responsibility, self-discipline, integrity, etc...), but it is also getting about the obstacles we face with some intelligence: initiative, quick adaptive thinking and strategizing your actions are key skills you learn in Scout activities like backwoodsman cooking as well.
To take a leaf from this story, studying hard is good, but studying smart is better!
Know that the leaders are all eager supporters for you guys to do well.

16/9 & 18/9 Meeting
Last Week of CCAs! **UPDATED**
Here's another Long Email from me again. Bear with me as I holler out some important information for this week, as well as post-exam programmes:
1. Top Secret Briefing for Sec 2s
All Sec 2 Scouts will have to attend this short briefing which I will be conducting. Even if you know you've not been attending meetings regularly, you are welcome to come as well (of course there's no option for not coming either). Yu Feng will be the Liaison i/c: if you can't make it please explain to him. Yu Feng will be reminding you guys as well.
The time and date are stated as per below:
Top Secret Briefing for Sec 2s
16th Sept 09 Wednesday
Time: Right after Wed Meeting (est. 1830 - 1915h)
Venue: TBC [means To Be Confirmed]
Bring your Wichita Kit and Writing Materials
2. Outdoor Cooking Test!
Three weeks of finding twigs, breathing in soot and wallowing in the sandy and sad corner of Ngee Ann has led you to this. As your dear PLC has kindly reminded everyone, this will be a Busy Friday. So do your preparations early.
You will need to arrange yourself into groups of 2s and/or 3s. Each group should not have more than 1 Sec 2. Groups are encouraged to stick to your patrols. Each group will have its own pit and need to cook a meal for 3 pax* consisting of 1 main dish (rice, potatoes, spaghetti, etc) and 3 side dishes. At least 1 of the 4 will have to be of Backwoodsman Standard i.e. using no utensils or aluminum foil. You can use mess tins or pots for the others.
NOTE: All groups are to submit their group members' names and their menus to Alexus before the Wednesday Meeting. If you don't have a team, please inform your PLC so that they can arrange you in a group.
Additional Notes:
- No prior marination to be done. All food to be prepared on Friday itself.
- You are allowed to bring sauces and condiments from home. You can mix them at home before coming over.
- HINT: smaller pieces cook faster. So I advise everyone to chop up what you have.
- If you're gonna cook a chicken, do cook the Whole Chicken. Innards (e.g. heart, liver, lungs, etc...) not necessary.
- Keep a receipt of your purchases. We MAY reimburse each group max. $10.
Pumpkin Rice with Eggs and Veg
Roasted Mud Chicken with poached apple
Vegetarian Kebab
Fruit cocktail in Watermelon Bowl
Some other non-backwoodsman dishes u can consider:
spaghetti with tomato sauce
hot lemon tea cooked in a kettle
vegetable and chicken stew in an indian pot
There are many ideas of what to cook out there: a simple Google search led me to a few from other Scout groups:
http://screamingeagles.forumotion.net/knowledge-and-skills-f35/backwoodsman-cooking-t32.htm --- Detailed advice from Screaming Eagles in Jurong

Do note that due to the nature of this Friday's meeting, it may stretch until 7.30pm (depends on how fast we clear up, eat up and clean up the place).
3. Post-exam activities!
We are trying to arrange more courses for everyone. We are looking into kayaking, sports climbing and possibly archery for the moment.
In addition, our GSLs are looking into a special treat for those who have achieved good attendance for this year's meetings!

Please be reminded that you all have a backwoodsman test on friday. Gather your own materials and dig your own pit before the meeting starts or else you would not have enought time to complete your cooking and so fail the test.

A note for PLC
Please meet me in school tomorrow (Monday 27th July) at 5pm for a short while (max 6pm). I will keep the briefing ASAP. Please conduct ur PLC meeting to plan the week's meeting before 4.30. We will be talking about the following points:
1. Evaluation of Spiderweb Messaging System (Sms)
2. Plans Ahead for Pioneering
3. Plans for Orienteering Workshop/tests
4. Updates on possible Courses coming up
5. Testcards
6. AOB
As we have many points to cover, I hope you will come prepared with the plans for this Wed and Fri. I understand that there is the Frisbee clinic/challenge on Friday. Only those who have signed up will be going; the rest will continue on with the Fri Meeting.
To help you with the planning, here's a hint for everyone: in 3 weeks time, each patrol must be able to solve a problem that will require a pioneering project as a solution (e.g. need to cross a gap, therefore construct a bridge).
Enjoy what remains of your weekend!

Taking nutrition and fitness to a higher level
Hi fellow Scouts,
After 8 months since I started out on a quest in search of ways to improve our health and well-being, I would like to share with you what I have gathered. This is a brief guide to improving your health and fitness level that consists of the latest information in 2 main areas of study: Nutrition and environmental health. You can use this as a guide for many different purposes; whether you are out to earn the althlete’s badge, improve your NAPFA scores, or do better for your upcoming exams. This is an extensive reading that consists of simple steps for improving your heart health, overall health and mental function.
Optimal nutrition
So far, what we have been learning in school and in our healthy lifestyle programmes about nutrition is essentially the Food Pyramid. After extensive data gathering, I find that the Food Pyramid is merely nutrition at the most basic level. The Food Pyramid is known by everyone. I am not here to discuss that. If you follow the Food Pyramid faithfully, you would become decently healthy. But we should not settle for good health if we can strive for optimal health. So these are the key aspects of nutrition that I would like to share for achieving optimal health, given in a concise manner.
Superfoods:
-Fatty fish: Fatty fish are an excellent source of the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA -- both essential for brain growth and function. For brain and heart health, eat two servings of fish weekly. Choose light tuna due to concerns over mercury content.
-Berries: Studies show that diets rich in blueberries significantly improved both learning capacity. Blueberries and cranberries pack lots of powerful nutrients in them.
-Fruits and vegetables: Add a variety of different colours to your meals. Certain fruits like kiwis and red grapes are especially good.
-Nuts and seeds: Nuts and seeds are good sources of the antioxidant vitamin E, which is associated with improved cognitive function. Almonds are a good source of protein, fiber, vitamin E, and a variety of antioxidants. Choose varieties that are unseasoned and contain less/no sugar.
-Yoghurt: Yoghurt is a potent addition to your diet. It contains probiotics that clear up digestive problems and is shown to improve immune function. Try to choose varieties that have live cultures. Certain brands contain information about its CFU content (I don’t think I will elaborate on that). Try to choose those with more than 100,000,000 CFU units if available.
-White Tea: White tea is known for its numerous health benefits and is superior to green tea. However, one small problem here is that tea interferes with iron absorption. So do consume white tea between meals. For more information on preparation techniques, you can search online.
